What is LASIK?

LASIK is a quick and virtually painless procedure, and the most popular laser eye surgery option for treating common refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

Fort Myers LASIK Eye Surgery PatientYou may be a suitable candidate for LASIK if you:

To determine candidacy, our team will meet with you and conduct a comprehensive eye exam to determine your vision stability, corneal thickness and eye health. If you are not a candidate for LASIK, we can recommend an alternative treatment option that addresses your vision needs.

LASIK Procedure

LASIK is a safe procedure that can be completed in our office in approximately 15 minutes. We do our utmost to make the procedure as painless and comfortable as possible. To begin, we will apply a topical anesthetic to the eyes. Once the eyes are numbed, a thin flap will be created to access the cornea. The flap is folded back and an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea. Once complete, the flap is closed back over the cornea so it can naturally heal. No sutures are needed.

Immediately after the procedure, you will need to have someone drive you home. There is minimal downtime with LASIK; most patients are able to return to work the following day. You can expect to begin seeing results in less than 24 hours. Our team will schedule a follow-up visit with you to monitor your vision.

As with any laser vision correction procedure, there are risks involved. Rare but possible side effects include infection, dry eye and glare. Complications are rare and occur in less than 1 percent of surgeries.

Benefits of LASIK

Thousands of our patients have enjoyed the benefits of LASIK surgery. With LASIK you can:

LASIK FAQs

Is LASIK safe?

LASIK has an excellent safety record and success rate. However, no surgical procedure can guarantee a complication- or risk-free outcome. The likelihood of a complication occurring during LASIK drastically decreases when you work with a qualified LASIK surgeon. During your initial consultation with a potential surgeon, be sure to ask them about their qualifications, including years of experience, number of LASIK surgeries they have performed, advanced technology they use and their success rate. You should also ask them how they handle complications, in the rare case that one occurs.

Is LASIK treatment painful?

LASIK surgery itself is painless thanks to anesthetic drops used to numb the surface of the eyes prior to the procedure. Recovering from LASIK is also generally painless. You may feel some discomfort in the hours after surgery, such as a gritty sensation or mild irritation in the eye. This is temporary and can be easily managed with eye drops prescribed by your surgeon.

Can both eyes be treated in one LASIK procedure?

Yes, our LASIK surgeons can perform the procedure on both eyes the same day.

When can I drive after LASIK?

Most patients are able to drive the day after surgery. However, every patient is different. You must wait to drive until your surgeon clears you to do so.

How long do LASIK results last?

In most cases, results with LASIK are permanent. However, some patients require a follow-up procedure to enhance their LASIK results.

It is important to note that LASIK does not treat age-related eye conditions, such as presbyopia and cataracts. This means that blurry vision or other vision problems can still develop after LASIK.

How much does LASIK cost?

The cost of LASIK varies based on several factors, including the specific approach used, the degree of correction needed and the technology used. Our team can provide you with accurate pricing information after meeting with you for an in-person evaluation.

Is LASIK covered by medical insurance?

LASIK is considered to be an elective procedure and is typically not covered by medical insurance. All Saints Eye Center is proud to offer patients affordable financing to help patients pay for their procedure.
